#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ∙ A couple who broke up months ago pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends in this glittering and wise novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry.
“The beach-read master hooks us again."—People
Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t.
They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.
Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group’s yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blissful week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most.
Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they’ll all have together in this place. They can’t stand to break their friends’ hearts, and so they’ll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. It’s a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week…in front of those who know you best?
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
A former couple are forced to keep up appearances in this surprisingly touching romantic comedy. Harriet and Wyn were the “it” couple among their friends, so they can’t bring themselves to announce that they have actually broken up. Months ago. Now they’re being thrown together for a week in Maine with their friend group, forcing them to keep up a charade that proves far more challenging than either of them expected. Emily Henry is one of our favorite romantic-comedy writers—Happy Place is packed with witty dialogue, sunny beach scenes, luscious lobster feasts, and wonderfully comforting portraits of longtime friendship. The audiobook is narrated by Julia Whelan, one of the best in the game, with a sparkle in her voice. Sweet, poignant, and sometimes painful, Happy Place is a funny, sensitive story about what it really means to split up.
Customer Reviews
Meh
Emily Henry tells a good tale and the narrator is excellent. But there’s not enough “there” there. The plot is watery thin.
One of the Few Books I Couldn’t Finish
I know the effort it takes to write a book—but this one was a real struggle. The story dragged endlessly, and the characters felt flat.It read like the author was more focused on hitting a word count than telling a compelling story.
The premise promised a touching narrative about lifelong friends, but the relationships just weren’t convincing. The emotional connection was missing, and I never found myself caring about any of the characters. I kept hoping it would turn a corner, but it never did.
Out of the hundreds of books I’ve read, this is one of only a handful I couldn’t bring myself to finish. I simply couldn’t read another page.
So cute!!!
I guessed the ending early on but it still had me so smiley and happy!
