This is NOT Harry Potter
I hope I can convey my thoughts and opinions properly to help give an idea behind this book.
I first discovered this series on my Facebook news feed. The description of which was a cross between "Harry Potter" and "The Hunger Games." Having read both of these series (and particularly enjoying all of the Harry Potter books), I decided to give this series a shot.
My conclusion, upon listening to the first book, is that this is nothing like either of those other series. The only similarities is the fact of living in a "magical" world and some people considered themselves "wizards."
There is also a unique friendship that feels a need to take it upon themselves to solve a mystery. However, unlike J.K.Rowlings' wizarding world, this story is filled with a more dark and uneasy setting.
The book is definitely written to keep its readers interested and has moments that leave a listener with an "ah-ha" feeling at times.
The main reason I left out a star on the rating is due to the fact that it was almost $18 for a book I had never heard about, couldn't read any reviews, and wasn't allowed to rent, read, or sample further.
I was nervous about throwing my money away on something that might end up to be a waste. However, I feel satisfied knowing I haven't wasted my money. I look forward to listening to the other books, and hope to leave good reviews for others to make their own judgements on.
If you are like myself and have read all seven of the Harry Potter books (more than once) and have watched all eight movies (numerous times) and wish to listen to this series, I would recommend doing your best to NOT compare between the two series. While this series is similar in a small way, this is NOT Harry Potter.
