Harm's Way is book 1 in the Riot MC Biloxi series. This was my first book by this author and my first listen with narrators Paige Reisenfeld and Christian Leatherman. The story was entertaining, and the narration was smooth and easy to listen to. I enjoyed Christian Leatherman's way of voicing the other characters and how both narrators brought out their character's personality and brought the story to life.
Stephanie and Michael (Harm) were a dynamic couple once they realized what was meant to be. I loved how strong and sassy Stephie was in spite of starting over after hitting rock bottom. Har was a perfect MC alpha morally grey character with strong possessiveness once he set his eyes on Stephie, although he took a moment to get there and not be reluctant to what his heart really wanted. I felt this book has a great mix of drama, suspense, spice, and the working of club business/life.
Overall, this was an entertaining story with enjoyable narration. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Harm & Stephanie
This is book 1 in Karen Renee’s Riot MC Biloxi series which is a spinoff of Renee’s original Riot MC series. I haven’t read those and it may have been helpful as both Stephanie & Harm were introduced there – but I did OK.
Brother’s Best Friend/Best Friend’s Sister is one of my favorite tropes and I enjoyed Renee’s spin on that with shorter term step-brother angle. I also enjoy the unrequited crush is all grown up dynamic plus the fun sniping between Harm & Stephanie.
The majority of the book focuses on the relationship, especially in the beginning, and it took me a bit to get used to the switching of Stephanie’s POV being 1st person with Harm’s being 3rd. Even though it’s only a week or two it gave slow burn vibes. Stephanie getting away from a stalking ex and Harm fighting his growing feelings while still needing to be protective. The secondary characters were a lot of fun (I’m looking at you Brute & Roman!) and I enjoyed the banter of the club members.
The pacing and MC action doesn’t ramp up until the second half. There were some big surprises and double crosses I didn’t see coming and I enjoyed how that all played out. Sweet (for a burly biker) ending & epilogue. Harm & Stephanie definitely get their HEA, but there are some teases for what will be in future books.
I’d definitely recommend this for someone who wants edgier themes/situations but not quite full on dark romance.
Narration:
This was my first time listening to Paige Reisenfeld and Christian Leatherman. I enjoyed that they both used a Southern accent that fit well with the Mississippi location. Both did a great job with all the voices, emotions, and bringing Renee’s writing to life. I’m interesting in hearing more from them.

I enjoyed this romance with a strong opinionated female up against a reluctant love interest. Reluctant I say, since he doesn’t want to be in a relationship but he can’t help his burning desire for her. Which quickly turns to possessive. I enjoyed the push/pull between Stephanie and Harm, watching him fight his attraction for her. The MC portion of the book felt incomplete a bit. For over the first half, as we get to understand the MC and their businesses, it seems glossed over. They did mention not wanting to get into selling the heavier illegal side of things so I’d assumed they were an MC club with a conscience. And then BAM they start talking about offing people like it’s another day at the office. So that threw me a bit.
I think I would have preferred reading this book rather than the audio. In my opinion, the female narrator, Paige Reisenfeld, was just ok. She sounded robotic. So, it was hard to get into the female character. Her dialogue parts were good but the narration was a bit stiff and unnatural. Christian Leatherman does some good southern accents and varying voice inflections for each character. Paige also does a good male deep voice
This is the first book I’ve read of Karen Renee and I will be reading book 2. I enjoyed the story and the characters introduce that I’m intrigued to find out more.
