The first book in Iris Johansen’s Logan Tanner series introduces us to a casino mogul whose dark past is beginning to catch up with him. When Johansen’s hero is called on to extract the beautiful and brilliant Lara Balkon from the grasp of a devious Russian mobster, he gets more than he bargained for. We were all in for the book’s clever plot and brisk action—and the romantic sparks between Logan and Lara really took us by surprise. We especially enjoyed Johansen’s portrayal of Tanner, a man used to being in control who’s trying to deal with his unexpected feelings. Narrator Elisabeth Rodgers does a great job with both the explosive action sequences and the couple’s intimate scheming. If you’re looking for excitement, High Stakes is a total jackpot.
