APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Hip-hop hooray for this rave to the rap world by best-selling, Barack Obama–approved author Shea Serrano. (The former president put Basketball [And Other Things] on his Top 12 books list in 2017.) Here, Serrano dives into the massively popular musical genre in a collection of lighthearted yet perceptive essays. Serrano cracks us up and makes us think with his quirky, conversational writing style as he asks—and answers—pressing questions about the rap game over the years. Whether he’s exalting the genius of Missy Elliott, exploring Cardi B’s meteoric rise to fame, or digging up the age-old Tupac-versus-Biggie debate, every essay here is packed with wit, insight, and impeccably researched music history. Playwright Bernardo Cubria lays down the ideal vocal track as the audiobook’s narrator, and he keeps the pace brisk and the quips crackling.

Shirley Jackson & The White House
This book is incredible. It’s joyful, insightful, and makes you want to make a playlist for every single chapter including the important songs referenced in those chapters. Yes, important. A book full of playfulness; an interview with a (fictional, live) chicken; and multiple chapters based on the premise of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery.” A book that a rap music fan and a PhD in lit can both enjoy. A book comparing the difficulty of engaging in adult activities in a bathtub and the White House, as being on the same boss level of difficulty. I understand the heavy, insurmountable financial burden it would be to have parts of each track played in each audio chapter, but that’s the only thing that would make it better. Buy it now.
