Decades of statistics and research
A thorough, detailed, thoughtful exploration of the dichotomies between autocracy and democracy and the vulnerable place in between that can result in violence. A must read for 2022z
One sided
You can tell this was written by a far leftist. There is a lot of good information in here but when writing books like this you should leave your opinions out about people and events and just write about the facts. I felt that things were put into context to fit a narrative. Huge no no when writing about historical events.
Use your time better
Listen to Yascha Mounk instead — it’s a better use of your time and money. He also has a great podcast, the Good Fight.
It’s unfortunate to me that 8/9 chapters are look at the causes of civil war and just 1/9 examines how to avert war, which is a far, far more important, though perhaps less hot topic. This book must be read with caution. America is not gone. Let’s not let it slip by acting as though it is.
