Jessie lives with her family in the frontier village of Clifton, Indiana. When diphtheria strikes the village and the children of Clifton start dying, Jessie’s mother sends her on a dangerous mission to bring back help.
But beyond the walls of Clifton, Jessie discovers a world even more alien and threatening than she could have imagined, and soon she finds her own life in jeopardy. Can she get help before the children of Clifton, and Jessie herself, run out of time?

OK, but there are better
Our girls (10 and 12) have heard about 40 audiobooks on our drive. For the age group this is targeted as, we were disappointed after being interested in the concept. Lots of time spent with an innocent girl looking at the modern world with amazement/wide eyed wonder, but there's not enough action/thriller moments to keep the story from feeling like it's plodding along. Good overall, but probably for 7-9 year olds. Recommend the Book Thief, Graveyard Book, War Horse, or Dragon Rider for this age group...all are excellent audiobooks.
