A Mixed Bag of Monster Tales - In a Good Way

This book's greatest selling point is also its greatest detriment: that the authors read their own stories. On the one hand, only the authors know exactly how they intended each line to be read - what emotion, what emphasis, what pacing...hearing them read their own works leads to a greater understanding of the stories. On the other hand, not all authors are great oral story tellers, and their readings can be disappointing.

Bruce Coville's stories are my favorite in the print version, and I have to admit that I am disappointed in the way he reads aloud. It's not that he's terribly bad at it, but he's not terribly good either. By contrast, the traditional Native American tale of "Kokolimalayas the Bone Man" left me cold in the print, but became my favorite of the anthology when transformed by Laura Simms' performance of her tale - the voice and the sound effects she produced with traditional instruments gave the story a life it did not have on the page.

On the basis of the stories themselves, not their readers, I can highly recommend this volume. It's a fantastic sampling of monster stories, each one brilliant in its own way, each one expressing the theme in a highly individual manner. The stories, and the monsters themselves, may be scary, funny, sad, disgusting, beautiful, or more than one of the above. This is the kind of anthology about which you can say that there is something for everyone without meaning that most of the stories won't appeal to the readers - everyone's favorite story will be different, but I can't imagine a listener not liking all or most of the tales to some extent. They're that well done.

Let me add that I was thrilled to find this title on iTunes as the audio was never released on CD and the printed version has been out-of-print for some time.
