Publisher Description
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet meets The 100 in this unforgettable debut by a brilliant new voice.
A century ago, scientists theorised that a habitable planet existed in a nearby solar system. Today, ten astronauts will leave a dying Earth to find it. Four are decorated veterans of the 20th century’s space-race. And six are teenagers, graduates of the exclusive Dalton Academy, who’ve been in training for this mission for most of their lives.
It will take the team 23 years to reach Terra-Two. Twenty-three years spent in close quarters. Twenty-three years with no one to rely on but each other. Twenty-three years with no rescue possible, should something go wrong. And something always goes wrong.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Setting a bunch of teenagers into space for a twenty-three year mission to save humanity sounds like a recipe for disaster, but in Temi Oh’s eloquent near-future drama, only the brightest and hardest working need apply. Oh’s close scrutiny of her subjects—Jesse with the looming foretelling of dying young, multi-linguist Poppy escaping her humble upbringing, heroic Harry who seemed to have everything, but crumbles when the ship goes awry—gmakes for compelling listening away from straight sci-fi. As you veer between points of view, you find their mission in dire straits and a nail biting plea for rescue.

Rich Characters
I really enjoyed this book. This book is split into sections. The first half revolves around the lives of the children who train to become astronauts at a young age and sent on this mission. The latter half is about the space voyage the select few embark upon and the tribulations through which they must persevere. However this story is about the highly complex main characters above all. The rich character development makes this book relatable and moving. We take a look into their pasts and the snapshot incidents that make them who they are now. We take a look at how the immense pressure of the space mission and how living isolated in space affects each of them. You grow to care deeply for the characters and hope as they do, that they reach Terra-Two. I highly recommend this novel and especially the audiobook. The narrator was excellent at differentiating between characters, emoting, and had a skill with various accents. All in all a great audiobook production as well! (In a time when trilogies are all the rage, I was glad to finally find an interesting and captivating stand alone novel. However, I would totally read a sequel!!)
Bad book, worse narrator
Maybe the book would have been ok if I just read it. The narrator sounds like she has a piece of hard candy in her mouth and keeps swishing it around. It’s really annoying and I’ve never listened to a worse narrator. I unfortunately listened to the whole book with the hopes that it would at some point become interesting, it did not. I chose this book because I love Andy Weir and a couple sites had said to read this book if you love The Martian. This book at some point says the word “Mars” and that is the only thing it has in common with The Martian. I was so glad when it was over.
