Two criminal empires together control all of New England.
Until a beautiful woman comes between the Irish and the Italians, launching a war that will see them kill each other, destroy an alliance, and set a city on fire.
Danny Ryan yearns for a more “legit” life and a place in the sun. But as the bloody conflict stacks body on body and brother turns against brother, Danny has to rise above himself. To save the friends he loves like family and the family he has sworn to protect, he becomes a leader, a ruthless strategist, and a master of a treacherous game in which the winners live and the losers die.
From the gritty streets of Providence to the glittering screens of Hollywood to the golden casinos of Las Vegas, two rival crime families ignite a war that will leave only one standing. The winner will forge a dynasty.
Exploring the classic themes of loyalty, betrayal, and honor, City on Fire is a contemporary masterpiece in the tradition of The Godfather, Casino, and Goodfellas—a thrilling saga from Don Winslow, “America’s greatest living crime writer” (Jon Land, Providence Journal).
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
A violent mob war leaves the streets of Providence, Rhode Island, drenched in blood in this epic novel from crime fiction king Don Winslow. Danny Ryan knew he would probably never rise above being a lowly enforcer, despite marrying the daughter of the current boss of the Irish mob, John Murphy. But when his new brother-in-law sets off a brutal war with the Italian mafia, Danny will have to think like a kingpin if he wants to navigate the underworld’s shifting alliances and keep his family safe. Starting with Homer’s Iliad as his inspiration, Winslow has crafted an American crime story for the ages. His take on the philosophizing banter of big-time mafiosos sounds almost like poetry when it’s performed by narrator Ari Fliakos—whose ability to voice the story’s many memorable characters is pretty amazing. Fans of Goodfellas and The Godfather will love this future crime classic—and its excellent sequels.

A Good Read
My first audiobook. I liked it.
Guys Book
Think Good Fellas but Rhode Island and regular, not rich, people. Also a lot of characters/names to keep track of.
Untold RI stories now told…
Awesome book, having grown up in Rhode Island during this time period and been in close proximity to the types of characters in this book, Don did a great job depicting the lifestyle.
I have been waiting 30 years for someone to be able to describe the things that happened in that state in the 70’s and 80’s. Can’t wait for the next book.
