A heroine hoping to win her freedom ends up fighting for her life in the first book of Sarah J. Maas’ thrilling romantasy series. Celaena is only 18, but she’s already spent over a year imprisoned in the Salt Mines of Endovier for her crimes as an assassin. So when she’s picked to compete in a monthslong tournament to become the prince’s champion, she’s glad to put down her pickaxe and give it a shot. Even though she’s a professional killer, we adored Celaena’s youthful energy. She’s excited about fancy dresses, she loves books, and even with her life on the line, she never wants to get out of bed. Her skills are definitely an asset (especially with a sinister force picking off the competitors), but her emerging love triangle between flirty Prince Dorian and snarky Captain Chaol had us equally on edge. Narrator Elizabeth Evans nails Celaena’s unmistakable attitude, getting us so invested in her story that by the end, we were reaching for the sequel.

A Good Opening
First in series novels need to captivate the reader to continue reading the remaining books. The Throne of Glass novel did just that. It leaves enough mystery and unanswered questions that the reader will be frustrated if they don’t keep reading. This is a lovely gateway drug into the writing of Sarah J. Maas and I’m here for it!
SJM is the author of the century
Regardless, if you are well known to the SJM universe or just diving in TOG is a great series to divulge in! Wonderful characters that can be related to even with the modern real world comparison. Must read if you like romantasy, also a great entry book to spicy reading. (We all can love a little smut 😚) The Maas universe is a fabulous collection to add to your reading list!!
Missing parts of words in audiobook
Not sure if it’s the voice actor they chose to read the audiobook, or whoever was recording it, but every time there was a pause half of the first word at the start of a new sentence was “missing.” Like she started reading before they hit the record button.
