Well constructed.
I was looking for a book that. Brought zen to an accessible level. This wasn't it. It would seem someone would have figured out how to conceptualize this for modern people without six thousand Asian references, as I wasn't looking for a strictly Buddhism book. Lots of stories with no real tangible ideas.
Amazingly well read ancient zen wisdom. Nothing else like it around....
First of all congratulations to Thomas Cleary for the inspired translation from the 12th century ancient Chinese writings of Master Foyan. The narrator incredibly brings these words to life, speaking them as though they were his own. The teachings of Master Foyan can thus pierce the veil of time and come to life again in this modern day to show us the way. I have listened to this maybe 60 times, and I feel like I "get" more and more with each listening.
If you have listened to Eckhart Tolle and you listen to Foyan you begin to understand that "there is only one master." Though each individual may take different forms, are alive in different time periods, and present their teachings in different cultural contexts, their words point to the same truth.
