I didn’t think it was possible for Iron Flame to take what Fourth Wing did to me and make it worse, but here we are. This book didn’t just hurt me. It emotionally obliterated me.
What Rebecca Yarros accomplished in Iron Flame is some of the deepest, richest character development I’ve experienced in romantasy. Every single character feels more layered, more scarred, more real. Violet’s growth is relentless and earned: physically, mentally, emotionally. She is forged through pain, choice, and consequence. And Xaden… Xaden is no longer just the brooding love interest. He is tragedy, devotion, restraint, and inevitability wrapped into one devastating arc.
The plot is incredible, dense, strategic, and merciless. The stakes are higher, the politics sharper, the betrayals deeper. There is no comfort reading this book. Every chapter feels like walking on a knife’s edge, trusting Rebecca Yarros to eventually catch you… while knowing she absolutely might not.
And then there’s that moment.

Xaden turning Venin absolutely destroyed me. I was not prepared. Not emotionally. Not mentally. Not spiritually. The devastation of that choice, the sacrifice, the love behind it, the terror of what it means… broke something in me. It reframed everything we thought we knew about him and left me reeling. I still haven’t recovered. I don’t think I ever will.
Once again, GraphicAudio did not disappoint. The dull cast narration, the music, the sound design; everything amplified the emotional weight to unbearable levels. The performances made the pain sharper, the love more desperate, and the silence after certain scenes feel loud. Listening to Iron Flame wasn’t just consuming a story; it was surviving it.
The only critique I would add, and it comes from a place of pure love, is that I wish the GraphicAudio version were released at the same time as the book. For me, the Empyrean series simply isn’t the same experience without Gabriel Michael and Khaya Fraites. Their performances have become inseparable from these characters, and waiting to hear their voices feels like waiting for the story to fully come alive. The series hits differently with them, and I can’t imagine experiencing it any other way.
This book is brutal. It’s devastating. It’s brilliant. Iron Flame doesn’t exist to comfort the reader; it exists to test us. And somehow, despite the pain, I would relive every moment again without hesitation.
Rebecca Yarros didn’t just raise the bar; she shattered it.
And I am willingly, hopelessly, completely ruined. 🐉🔥🖤

The book is just as amazing as the first. The graphic version is just so good. How can I listen to any book this same again. I did immersive reading my second time listening and I truly fell in love with the book and characters even more the second time.
