Baptist-Calvinist preacher Archibald Brown denounces modern theology with reference to the flood of Noah and the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Besides Scripture, his visits to Pompeii and mount Vesuvius also inspired him to paint these fearful scenarios. 

"Flee from the wrath to come!" he admonishes his audience.
