Publisher Description
Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of eponymous Jane Eyre, her growth to adulthood, and her love for Mr. Rochester, the byronic master of Thornfield Hall. The novel contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, but is nonetheless a novel many consider ahead of its time given the individualistic character of Jane and the novel's exploration of sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism.
Customer Reviews
Good for its price
Audiobook didn't seem to have any errors, and the reader was pretty good. Definitely worth the price. Also, the problem with the second part another reviewer mentioned seems to have been resolved now.
IMPORTANT
This audiobook version of Jane Eyre DOES NOT have the second part. It will attempt to download that part, but it won't work. If you want all three parts of this book, I would not recommend downloading this version.
Good but Mr. Rochester’s voice lacks nuance
This is a good narration, well spoken, and mostly easy to listen to. It has excellent intelligibility, is well recorded, and mostly flows well, aside for a few obvious and somewhat incongruent overdubs. I was impressed with the French quibbits, as they were very well spoken and believable — it appears the narrator is well versed in French as well as English. A bit of Scottish dialect thrown is also appreciated. However when speaking Mr. Rochester’s lines, the narrator’s voice seems to consistently default to excessively stern and gruff. Although this character actually seems like this much of the time as I surmise from the text, surely he deserves more nuance. In fact this tone of voice issue became so annoying that I actually considered purchasing another version 2/3 of the way through the novel as I found it both annoying, as well as a perceptual distraction from what the character was truly meant to be. That said, taking the time to really get this right might have I suppose resulted in greatly increased narration time, which perhaps would be reflected in the price.
