The powerful and riveting new book in the multimillion-selling Killing series by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard
Autumn 1944. World War II is nearly over in Europe but is escalating in the Pacific, where American soldiers face an opponent who will go to any length to avoid defeat. The Japanese army follows the samurai code of Bushido, stipulating that surrender is a form of dishonor. Killing the Rising Sun takes readers to the bloody tropical-island battlefields of Peleliu and Iwo Jima and to the embattled Philippines, where General Douglas MacArthur has made a triumphant return and is plotting a full-scale invasion of Japan.
Across the globe in Los Alamos, New Mexico, Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer and his team of scientists are preparing to test the deadliest weapon known to mankind. In Washington, DC, FDR dies in office and Harry Truman ascends to the presidency, only to face the most important political decision in history: whether to use that weapon. And in Tokyo, Emperor Hirohito, who is considered a deity by his subjects, refuses to surrender, despite a massive and mounting death toll. Told in the same page-turning style of Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, Killing Patton, and Killing Reagan, this epic saga details the final moments of World War II like never before.
Customer Reviews
Right decision, right time.
Easy for one not living at the time to pass judgement on those that did and were in charge. I believe this book opens one eyes that what those decisions makers were faced with. After reading descriptive facts in this book I believe the right decision was made and carried out.
Excellent
As usual, excellent.
Absolutely Educational & Satisfying
By far the best book I’ve read in 2023, right up there with Jack Carr’s series. As I listened with outstanding reader, stories I never knew happened that were crushing and heart breaking.
For what the Americans experienced of utter diabolical cruelty, to the Philippine nation, to the young girls and others was diabolical evil. The policies and creeds of the Japanese people, politicians and military leaders was dark, extremely cruel and terrifying to ponder if our living God had permitted this godless nation to be victorious.
Saddening was the utter blindness of a people to follow and obey in that culture diabolical lies and to believe that little emperor was a god!
Extremely well written, recited and left me with overwhelming gratitude for the US military, PresidentTruman , the pilots and the generals were impeccable. The wisdom of MacArthur will be debated as they he thought about the long run of a rebirth of Japan. Divine Justice will intervene as to the emperor and false hid complex, of the nuclear or atomic bombs as to their morality. My humble opinion not requested but I believe the Presidents made hard decisions with courage to save lives, our nation and end, an evil, diabolically engaged war of godless evil ignorant and heathers Japanese. They had to deal with evil and end it. They gad to do whatever they could
muster and devise to end an immorally corrupted, evilly engaged and conducted atrocities by Japan. They ended evil for awhile. Thanks be to God.
