The tragedy of King Lear receives an outstanding performance in an all-star cast led by Britain’s senior classical actor, Paul Scofield. He is joined by Alec McCowen as Gloucester, Kenneth Branagh as The Fool, Harriet Walter as Gonerill, Sara Kestelman as Regan and Emilia Fox as Cordelia. This is the ninth recording of Shakespeare plays undertaken by Naxos AudioBooks in conjunction with Cambridge University Press, and is directed by John Tydeman. It was released to mark the eightieth birthday of Paul Scofield in January 2002.

Simply the best! This performance of Shakespeare's masterpiece find Paul Schofield at the peak if his power. The performances are all wonderful by a terrific cast. If you listen to only one audio version if this play in your lifetime, then listen to this.
I am a big fan of Lear and have seen many many performances - live, audiobook, and filmed. This is easily the best recorded version I know of and is recommended to all fans of the play. It's also the right version to start with if you're a student.
This audiobook is ABRIDGED and it is an outright LIE to call it unabridged. Over the course of the entire play, about 10 pages worth of text are omitted. Makes following along very hard. The dramatization is well done but if you are looking for a truly unabridged version, don't buy this!
