Just Okay

For the price, the audiobook was good. I wanted to be productive during my long commute and this seemed like a good thing. There were a couple problems though:

1. The beginning is slow. They really break it down for you and don't introduce too much. The last third is the opposite. Words are translated in sentence or 2 sentence chunks and I couldn't associate the russian with the translation. She (Oxsana/Yelena/whoever) talked too fast at the end too.

2. Random vocabulary, and not enough reinforcement. They try to give you a real life situation of a guy visiting Russia and the things he encounters and the vocab he needs. Russian dolls, mushrooms, cottage cheese, and coffins are interesting, sure, but how about practice conjugating verbs or declining nouns? They give you a verb conjugated for 'you command' but not the infinitive or any other forms. Sure there's patterns, but practice helps. Also, explanations about things are given in English, but for me it was too much telling, and not enough showing by examples. They talk to you a lot in English and then say to see reference materials for practice. I bought an audiobook so I could listen to it while driving. I don't feel like looking at declention tables.

3. The characters are annoying. They randomly have some feminine American guy at the beginning (the least annoying), then switch over to some guy with a British accent that sounds fake it's so over the top (Eddy, whose 'American name' is Jon?). He half heartedly but incessantly flirts with a Ukranian girl that is flat out mean to him in a bubbly voice that always sounds like she is about to go into another clause, but doesn't. I could ignore this, but they waste a LOT of time doing it, and I don't find it amusing. It makes listening to the audiobook multiple times like being stuck in season 2 of Jersey Shore with Sam and Ronnie (you can do better Eddy!) The only times I laughed are when they dis'ed Ukraine, which was kind of funny and in the spirit of 'in soviet russia' jokes.

4. The Russian Culture Lessons. This may not be fair since they advertise this aspect of the book, but I didn't really dig it. That stuff was cool, but it kind of seemed like a cop out for thoughtful language teaching. It was good, but there was too much of it. About half of it you could look up on your own without any leads/knowledge of Russia, and I would have appreciated it better worked into the lessons I think.
