Sometimes a novel’s setting feels so intensely real that it becomes a character in the story. That’s definitely true of Liz Moore’s stunning portrait of Philadelphia’s downtrodden Kensington Avenue, which serves as the backdrop to her deeply engrossing tale of family, addiction, and murder. Sisters Kacey and Mickey don’t talk anymore—Kacey is spiraling down into drug addiction, while Mickey is devoted to her job as a police detective. But when Kacey goes missing, Mickey dedicates herself to finding her sister before a serial killer preying on the neighborhood’s forgotten women does. Narrator Allyson Ryan, who did a similarly great job reading the best-selling Fleishman Is in Trouble, transports us to the Philly streets with her incredible range of accents. We felt every ounce of Mickey’s increasing desperation and her cynical boss’ seen-it-all weariness. Great conversation starter
There’s a lot to like about this book, the plot was good and the main character is likable. But the ending left a lot to be desired and there wasn’t much character development.
A+ Narration
Great story and narrator was perfect for this!! Highly recommend this great mystery novel!
