Lucifer's Hammer (Unabridged‪)‬

I read this book when it first came out and have re-read it a few times more. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it for the first time. It gives you food for thought, what if?

This is another masterwork by the team of Niven and Pournelle. A new comet is discovered by a pair of amateur astronomers. At first, it's just a curiosity. A nice excuse for a documentary. Later, calculations show it's going to come close to the earth. Maybe really close. Few people expect it to actually hit. But a few people start making plans anyway. Just in case. This is a truly great “end of civilization” story. We follow quite a number of characters, seeing the devastation from many angles. How do you prepare? What do you do when all your preparations go up in smoke? The detail with which the impact has been visualized is quite amazing. And even though there are a bunch of characters, they're conceived with such detail and individuality that you'll believe. To the one-star reviewer who dinged the book because it's old: yep, it's old, and so what? There's nothing about this book that feels dated. I don't think I know a finer example of the “almost end of the world” category.
