Hurts the ears

The occasional problem with audiobooks is that the narrator can kill a good story dead. I can’t complain that Mark Twain’s tales are long winded and overly quaint for modern adults, because the expectation is that you know what you’re getting into with this genre. The problem with this rendition is that the narrators are well intentioned but not professional voice actors so there are incongruent regional American accents tackling material that typically is best carried with southern twangs. Add to that questionable tinny audio quality and it becomes a struggle to listen all the way through.
