Speaking to us with the wisdom of age and in a voice at once haunting and immediate, Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. Sayuri's story begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. It concludes with World War II when the geisha houses are forced to close and Sayuri reinvents herself and finds a rare kind of freedom on her own terms.

I couldn't stop listening to this book. I was addicted. It was one of the best books I've "read" in a long time. I was captivated by her story. I enjoyed the narrator, and found her voice easy to listen to. I would 100% recommend this book. I will probably go back and read it again another time.
Just purchased the audiobook however I can't download it!? Has anyone else had this problem? I paid and now I can't even listen to the book, very disappointed. Can anyone help?
Fascinating story. Truly awful narration.
Captivating story read in a dreadful, monotone, droning voice. I completely hated the narrator & instead of becoming drawn into this wonderful story, I felt assaulted every time I turned on my iPod & heard that cold, miserable voice begin the story again. Only able to finish because of the quality of the writing.
