A woman’s fight for her life leads her to truths she never wanted to discover in this gripping domestic thriller from Kimberly Belle. Jade seemingly has it all: a celebrity-chef husband, two beautiful kids, and a home in one of Atlanta’s ritziest neighborhoods. Then out of the blue, a frightening man breaks into her house and demands $734,296—or he’ll kill her and the children. From there it only gets more harrowing, because when her husband begins scrambling to raise the ransom, Jade realizes just how little she really knows about his business empire. (What’s with that extremely specific ransom amount?) Belle brilliantly shifts the story’s point of view throughout the tale, so we can observe the ongoing crisis from all sides; the three different narrators keep us on our toes. I’ll start by saying that I really hate giving mediocre/ bad reviews. I can only imagine the blood, sweat and tears shed in writing a book and putting yourself out there. That said, I mean no disrespect to the author in my honest review of their work.
I’ve listened to a couple of audiobooks by Kimberly Belle that overall were pretty good. Unfortunately, My Darling Husband really didn’t do it for me. It’s strange because it started out strong, hooking me in, but quickly left me waiting…and waiting….and waiting…to the point that I just wanted it to end. It wasn’t entirely bad, but it wasn’t good either.
The story is that of a mother/wife and her 2 kids being held for ransom in their home. The husband is given very little time to deliver the money or else his wife and children were to be killed. I won’t say anymore of storyline and spoil for those who haven’t read/listened. So, you think I would be on the edge of my seat, nervously waiting to see if he accomplished this. I wasn’t….I never got the feeling that this family was in grave danger. I waited, but nothing. Maybe it was more like I didn’t care because I knew nothing about these people to care. It really lacked in character development, suspense and that anticipated build-up I expected, but never came. I also felt parts of story just weren’t plausible. It all just fell flat for me.
On the upside the narration was great but IMO not enough so to be (audible.com) credit worthy.
