APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Vengeful gods, overconfident kings, snake-haired gorgons, sea voyages, heroic quests—it’s all Greek to us. We were happy to follow wherever British comedian, actor, and author Stephen Fry led us in this retelling of classical mythology. His skilled narration—complete with cheeky impersonations, zany contemporary characterizations, and comical commentary—brings excitement to the escapades of the Greek pantheon. Fry’s dry wit is perfect for updating these timeless tales, but what makes his storytelling really crackle is his remarkably deep knowledge of the material. He doesn’t just rewrite these myths to add punch lines. By updating them with modern language, Fry makes it clear how relatable they are and have always been. We loved all the fascinating things we learned in passing, like why a snake wrapped around a stake is a symbol of the medical profession, or that the horrific eternal punishment of King Tantalus gave us the word “tantalizing.” Mythos is a blast from the storied past that helps us better understand our own world—a Herculean task in its own right.
Absolutely loved it
Stephen Fry’s educated, but never condescending, humor shines as bright as ever! I’d happily listen to these stories all day!
For New and Veteran Lovers of Mythology
This was an absolute pleasure to listen to. I greatly enjoyed the references to Neil Gaiman (another lover of mythology) and Percy Jackson (who brought many to mythology for the first time), really turning this into a version of these myths for everyone. The etymological tidbits throughout are good fun. I quite enjoyed Fry’s appendices at the end, adding a little nonfiction to the mix.
Excellent and with Stephen Fry narrating even better.
First of all, I have enjoyed Greek Myth ever since I was introduced to it. Fry’s take, updates and interjections make this a must have. I’m sure the written version is just as great but having the added pleasure of Stephen Fry reading his own material makes this all the more worthwhile. I’ve listened to it 3 times now and it’s just as enjoyable as the first time through. The labor that went into this work is mind boggling but the outcome is a well presented worth every cent.
