A natural history of the wilderness in our homes, from the microbes in our showers to the crickets in our basements
Even when the floors are sparkling clean and the house seems silent, our domestic domain is wild beyond imagination. In Never Home Alone, biologist Rob Dunn introduces us to the nearly 200,000 species living with us in our own homes, from the Egyptian meal moths in our cupboards and camel crickets in our basements to the lactobacillus lounging on our kitchen counters. You are not alone. Yet, as we obsess over sterilizing our homes and separating our spaces from nature, we are unwittingly cultivating an entirely new playground for evolution. These changes are reshaping the organisms that live with us -- prompting some to become more dangerous, while undermining those species that benefit our bodies or help us keep more threatening organisms at bay. No one who reads this engrossing, revelatory book will look at their homes in the same way again.
Customer Reviews
Just wow
A must for every healthcare professional. While some of the ideas may not vibe with medical community, more research needs to be done.
As a doctor I can tell you that we are not taught to think why the patient is suffering. Or may be a few risk factors which doctors think are all that would cause that dreaded disease. We are simply taught to recognize pattern of disease and give treatment. We only rote what is written or passed on. Few doctors have insight into these facts. Similar pattern can be seen in every school. Children are not taught how to think and reason.
So these children grow up to be general lay person and so brainwashed from ads and media that they can't distinguish true facts from made up. Prof Dunn has done an amazing job. I had always thought about these things but he gave very good and concrete examples. Thank you for enlightening me and people who have read this book.
Exposure of invisible creatures
Thanks. This book was amazing and the science behind it incredible. I am a physician and plan to implement this into my practice when I treat patients who have infections allergies and gastrointestinal and behavioral problems. This book has given me a plethora of innovative ideas that I can implement immediately. I will advised all my colleagues to get this book so maybe we can start to change the way we practice medicine. Thank you again.
