Publisher Description

Here are weird stories set in the present, along with alternative histories filled with gritty realism and exacting detail as well as an assortment of horrors and monsters. Most of all, here are the tough heroes who throughout time master their own fears and face the very real terrors that haunt existence. Sometimes these heroes win a partial victory. Sometimes it’s enough to go down fighting.

Before Drake was a best-selling author of military science fiction, he was a prolific writer of horror and fantasy short fiction. "Denkirch", Drake’s first sale, is here, as well as many stories set in the worlds of his fantasy novels (Ranks of Bronze<./i>, Lord of the Isles, and others).

More than just a collection of stories, Night & Demons features extensive story notes that chronicle the development of one of science fiction's most popular writers, and provide detailed snapshots of the larger-than-life editors, publishers, and writers with whom Drake has worked throughout his career.

An outstanding, overlooked collection

This is the best horror collection that you’ve never heard of. David Drake is an amazing craftsman; his vocabulary is wide, deep,!and precise. His storytelling is inventive and often runs counter to the expectations of the genre. Even though people mostly associate him with military science fiction and occasionally fantasy, he’s been writing horror short stories of a very different kind for many years. They usually have some twist that escapes from the usual bounds of what you expect in a horror short story. Typically there is a science-fiction angle, for example. I sometimes see criticism of him that says that he is not very good at Ridge characterization, but I find that to be the opposite of the case. With just a few comments, and asides, he can take you really inside to what somebody is feeling and thinking. I don’t think any of these short short stories is a dud.

Summer should be classics, like “The Red Leer.”

You will not be let down if you listen to this.
