Publisher Description

YOU’RE MINE IN LIFE AND DEATH—BODY AND SOUL.

In the depths of the Finnish wilderness, more than wolves roam the dark woods.

When a death goddess attacks their village, best friends Siiri and Aina prove helpless to stop her from dragging Aina into Tuonela, the mythical underworld.

Determined to save her beloved Aina, Siiri braves a dangerous journey north, seeking help from the greatest shaman of legend—the only person ever to venture into Tuonela and return alive. There’s only one problem … the stories say he’s dead.

In Tuonela, the cruel Witch Queen turns Aina’s every waking moment into a living nightmare. But Aina soon learns that the God of Death himself has plans for her.

To escape, she strikes a costly bargain with him, not knowing that Siiri plots a daring rescue.

In this sweeping fantasy adventure—perfect for fans of Adrienne Young and Genevieve Gornichec—hope and love must conquer even death itself.

“Rich, vivid, and brimming with emotion, North is the Night pays touching homage to Finnish culture and mythology while forging a unique path all its own. … You will weep and cheer for Siiri and Aina as they find their strength and claim their power.”—Vaishnavi Patel, New York Times bestselling author of Kaikeyi

Sorry, you didn't earn the poly ending

I wanted to like this book. I'm a sucker for dual protagonists, death god romances, and mythology (even when it's just loose inspiration). Add into that a hint of sapphic romance, and you should have my perfect book. But instead, I found the heterosexual pairing unbearably forced and coerced (I could only listen to it in two hour chunks at best before I felt grossed out and needed a break.) A lot of that could have been fixed by just not having the blood bond bind their emotions together. But on the other hand, the sapphic pairing did not feel believable either because while one side clearly was in love, the other never clearly reciprocated and rarely spoke of her supposed female love interest as anything but a friend. In the end, it felt like the one girl "loved" whoever was next to her at the time, and even then only in name only. It felt shallow and hollow. And I'm a bisexual woman who is also polyamorous. I have nothing against multiple love interests even ending with multiple loves. But you have to earn it by showing desire and not forgetting someone the moment they are no longer in the room, so to speak. And that is still before we touch on how both girls only come into their "true" power by either marrying to gain the ability to tap into it or absorbing a male's inheritance. Let alone the awkwardness that is having an indigenous woman as a power hungry villain.

As far as the narration, it was mostly fine though there were a few times where English words were mispronounced.
