"Fascinating, shrewd . . . The book deftly traces the rhythms and patterns of Chinese history."—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

In this sweeping and insightful history, Henry Kissinger turns for the first time at book length to a country he has known intimately for decades and whose modern relations with the West he helped shape. On China illuminates the inner workings of Chinese diplomacy during such pivotal events as the initial encounters between China and tight line modern European powers, the formation and breakdown of the Sino-Soviet alliance, the Korean War, and Richard Nixon’s historic trip to Beijing. With a new final chapter on the emerging superpower’s twenty-first-century role in global politics and economics, On China provides historical perspective on Chinese foreign affairs from one of the premier statesmen of our time.

On China

It explains the consistencies in Chinese thinking that westerners find incomprehensible. A fascinating book that I could not stop until the end. I wonder what Mao would think of it? If it is as accurate as it seems then it should required reading (listening) for history students.

Explains an awful lot

I don't know how any one could hope to understand China, how it will act, how it will react, without a education like this. I had no idea this book covered such a swath of time. I thought it was a review of current thought. As a result, I find it far more helpful and insightful than expected. It seems a lot was left out at first blush, but if you go through the book and start to understand the Chinese attitude, then why they support Iran or destroy their own environment can be deduced. This book deserves much broader review than it's getting, because these people hold the mortgage on the US and if they ever call the loans, we'll need to know how to deal with them as masters. Why not five stars. It was a little dry. It is dense with information not entertainment.

Great Book

This book is a must read for anybody that wants to understand a country that is quickly becoming the most powerful the world has ever seen. Dr. Kissinger knows China. He knows the world like nobody ever has. A great man. A awesome book.
