Grows on you
Ngl, I was hoping for more from this book. It definitely grew on me enough by the end that I would consider reading the second book, but the fmc leaves a lot to be desired. She’s supposed to be quite clever but she panics in the smallest situations which often leads to her or the people around her being hurt. That being said, she had her moments. It’s just not enough to have made me love her. The romance is sweet, if not quick. Not quite insta-romance but definitely not any kind of slow burn. The writing was good, and the storytelling interesting. I would have loved for the author to delve more into the dark magic of the woods and explore the card elements more, there were so many good things that I grabbed onto and then wasn’t fulfilled when it was left behind. I’m not sure if this can qualify as a gothic romance, the darkest thing about this is the magic system which isn’t fully explored and the “nightmare”. That being said, I was drawn into listening and whenever I started, I had a hard time putting it down so the story has redeeming things about it for sure. I’m just not sure it was marketed properly as I expected something a bit different going into this.

Amazing Narrator that truly helps bring the story to life. Just enough humor, spice, and adventure. Don’t pass on this series. It’s a wonderful dark fantasy read
