Publisher Description
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty.
Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.
Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.
Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.
They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth.
But a storm is coming … and not everyone can survive its wrath.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Swoop and dive into the heart of Violet Sorrengail’s transition from student to formidable warrior in the thrilling third installment in Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean fantasy series. After a year and a half of lessons at Basgiath War College, anything Violet doesn’t know now, she’ll have to learn on her adventures outside the struggling kingdom of Navarre. Enemies are ready to attack, and allies are needed if there’s any chance of survival. Yarros’ expansive world-building feels almost limitless. Flying—literally—outside the wards means unexplored landscapes and cultures to experience and discover. Despite the unrelenting violence, truly shocking betrayals, and constant high-octane drama, we loved that Violet’s endlessly important relationships with her dragons, her friends and family, her home, and of course, her—let’s just call it complicated— history with her fighter Xaden Riorson (who’s undergoing some changes of his own) still drive every decision she makes. Narrator Rebecca Soler gives Violet both the steely resolve and the underlying doubt necessary to make this heroine relatable as well as powerful. This sweeping and suspenseful epic series soars to new heights and plunges to unexpected emotional depths.
Customer Reviews
Don’t buy this audiobook.
Book is incredible but the narration is terrible.
I’m torn
It may be because I just binged all three audiobooks, but I have a few comments.
First off, I’m general this is the BEST series I’ve read in a long time, so thank you to the author!
Here’s where I feel like the book failed us readers a bit. As others mentioned, throwing in character names in a way that suggests we should know or remember them being in the books for a single sentence doesn’t make for confident reading. However my biggest frustration is when there would be something MAJOR said, then the next thoughts were Violet (or someone else) thinking about something else completely, then suddenly changing back to Violet’s reaction to the MAJOR comment. It leaves readers feeling like they have to go back two sentences to re-read the comment since the reaction to the comment in several sentences later.
I also wish the endings had at least a little less abrupt of an ending. Especially for those of us reading the audiobooks, it feels jarring being in the middle of an intense moment and suddenly told “The End!”
And with that, I’ll finish again by how much I’ve enjoyed this series and really look forward to reading more!
Narrator disappoints
The narrator is not suited for the book. I’m having a difficult time getting through this. Where’s the Graphic Audio version??!!!!
