Publisher Description

A century ago, outsiders saw China as a place where nothing ever changes. Today, the country has become one of the most dynamic regions on earth. In Oracle Bones, Peter Hessler explores the human side of China's transformation, viewing modern-day China and its growing links to the Western world through the lives of a handful of ordinary people. In a narrative that gracefully moves between the ancient and the present, the East and the West, Hessler captures the soul of a country that is undergoing a momentous change before our eyes.

Book is great, but narrator’s pronunciation of Chinese words is monstrous

The butchering of the language is too much to bear on my Chinese ears. If I listen to a book about France I’d expect the narrator to have some basic understanding of how the language sounds. My god! I can clearly picture the poor narrator’s contorted jaw as he attempts the Chinese names and phrases sprinkled throughout the book, but cannot understand most of what he is saying. Come on! Teach the man some pinyin if you’re gonna make him narrate a 20hour book on China. The book is excellent. It’s not Peter hessler’s fault.
