Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. His mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet, left without a trace when he was nine years old. He doesn’t know what happened to her—only that her books have been banned—and he resents that she cared more about her work than about him.
Then one day Bird receives a mysterious letter containing only a cryptic drawing, and soon he is pulled into a quest to find her. His journey will take him back to the many folktales she poured into his head as a child, through the ranks of an underground network of heroic librarians, and finally to New York City, where he will learn the truth about what happened to his mother and what the future holds for them both.
Our Missing Hearts is an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can ignore the most searing injustice. It’s about the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children and the power of art to create change.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
A boy searches for his missing mother in this suspenseful novel from Little Fires Everywhere superstar Celeste Ng. Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner’s mother vanished from his life three years ago. Now she’s sent him a strange message consisting solely of drawings of cats. Digging deep into his childhood memories, Bird embarks on a quest to New York City to find her. Ng captures an unsettling sense of dread while telling a story about the dangers of being indifferent to suffering—until it happens to you. Actress Lucy Liu’s tender narration conveys the pain of a boy who trusts fairy tales but not people and of a woman forced out of her own home and family. Our Missing Hearts reminds us that even the smallest actions can spark change. It’s a listen that took us through so many emotions, from anger to grief to hope.

Unsure
I equal parts liked and disliked this book. I found it hard to stay engaged at times and the breathiness of the narrators voice was hard to listen to. However, I still wanted to know what happened because it seems like this could 100% be a reality one day.
Five stars
Beautifully written and excellent narration. Very timely piece.
