Publisher Description

Sophie Katz has just offered a man $12,000 for his services. Is she desperate or just meshugeneh?
Considering the kind of disasters that usually befall the half-black, half-Jewish mystery writer, probably both. Because the last time Sophie saw sexy P.I. Anatoly Darinsky, he practically danced a jig when she waved goodbye; a normal reaction for a man who'd nearly bought the farm trying to protect her from her own foolishness. What are the chances he'd agree to take incriminating pictures of her sister's philandering husband? Or that he'd let her tag along, you know, for research?

But when her brother-in-law turns up dead and her sister becomes the prime suspect, Sophie's priority is finding the real killer. With or without Anatoly's help. Her brother-in-law's secret life yields plenty of suspects, but the San Francisco police aren't taking any of them seriously. So Sophie does what comes naturally to her: she stirs up trouble (to lure the killer out, of course).

But if her crazy plan works, will Anatoly be there to protect her this time?

Pretty decent way to kill a roadtrip

I hadn't read (or heard) Kyra Davis' first book, so this was my first round with Sophie and Anatoly. There were constant references back to the first book which weren't well-explained, but it was easy to get past this. Sophie is an adorable character: well-intentioned, loyal and stubborn. I loved the Yiddish expressions peppered here and there, as well as her dogged determination to get to the bottom of the mystery.

I listened to it in the gym on the elliptical and it was hard to follow the story when I had to stop-n-start every 30 minutes (I also do weights - don't judge me!). It was a much better experience, as are all audiobooks, when you have an uninterrupted chunk of time to listen. I finished it up on a road trip to Napa Valley to visit some friends. It was a fun way to spend a couple of hours in the car while admiring the scenery.

It wasn't as LOL funny as I expected, but it was amusing. The pace could have been a little snappier. I wholeheartedly agree with the other reviewer when she stated that the narrator left a lot to be desired. It's nearly impossible to have one women do 6-8 voices with any credibility - the producers should have spent a couple bucks to get additional character readers. Sometimes it was hard to tell if it was Sophie, her sister, or one of Bob's female co-workers talking. Sometimes it actually jarred me "out" of the story when she would do Anatoly's voice since it was decidedly un-masculine. But really, once the story got rolling, it was just fine and didn't detract that much overall.

In summary, it was a good way to kill some time on the treadmill, elliptical, and best in the car. I won't listen to it again, but it was a lighthearted way to relax and I would recommend it to anyone who likes fluffy chick-lit with a decent female lead. The story isn't overly complicated, so it's easy to follow and you can easily let yourself get lost in it for a while.

Killer story--not such a killer narrator though

If you love a story with a very fashionable strong heroine, then you'll love this story! Lots of humor and a crime that will keep you guessing. I wasn't terribly fond of the female narrator, but I find that females have trouble doing most male voices and this gal was no different. Her voice for Anatoly bugged me at times and the sister bugged me as well--but not sure if it's her personality or her voice that bugged me the most. If you just concentrate on the plot and don't let the voices bug you too much, the story is very enjoyable. The "Words to Die By" at the start of every chapter gave me quite a few chuckles.

At first, I was going to give this story a 3 rating, but I really did enjoy the overall story so much that I had to give it higher.
