Customer Reviews
A well constructed whodunit
This is an enjoyable mystery with a clever solution. It is a more straightforward detective story than either of the other Allingham novels I have read (Mystery Mile and Look to the Lady), but it still has moments of adventure.
The characters in Police at the Funeral seemed to me much better drawn than those in the other two Allingham books I have read. Indeed, vivid characterization is one of this book’s most appealing features, and one that is enhanced by the reader’s skilled performance. The novel's pacing is good, and the writing is highly competent. While mostly unobtrusive, it occasionally made me smile with a clever phrase or unusual description. I recommend the book to fans of interbellum English mysteries or, naturally, of Albert Campion.
Note: A few passages of this story contain racism characteristic of the period in which it was written.
