Publisher Description
Winner of England's Booker Prize and a literary sensation Possession is an exhilarating novel of wit and romance, at once an intellectual mystery and a triumphant love story. As a pair of young scholars research the lives of two Victorian poets, they uncover their letters, journals, and poems, and track their movements from London to Yorkshire -- from spiritualist sénces to the fairy-haunted far west of Brittany. What emerges is an extraordinary counterpoint of passion and ideas.
Performed by Virginia Leishman
Customer Reviews
Best modern novel, period.
I have read this book 3 times, and have given it away three times because I want all my friends to read it. It’s a detective story; it is a romance — , nay, two romances, in two centuries. It is a satire of academia. It is a book about literary creation, and the tour de force is that Byatt writes all of the literature in the voices of all the writers she depicts. A friend gave me a copy after it had just come out; I was going on a three-week trip and thought it would be enough to occupy my reading time. After the first 50 pages, I couldn’t stop and finished it in 10 days. It is nothing short of brilliant. Now I have downloaded the ebook, so I’ll always have it.
