English actress Kate Beckinsale is the perfect reader for Jane Austen’s brilliant satire-slash-love story.
Very few novels inspire the kind of fanatical devotion that Jane Austen’s Regency-era classic does. Pride and Prejudice follows the inimitable Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters, who are expected to behave in just-so, socially acceptable ways…but that’s not really in the cards. Pride and Prejudice is a witty satire, a family melodrama, and, above all, one of the greatest—and most imitated—love stories in Western literature.
There was no such thing as an audiobook when Jane Austen first published Pride and Prejudice in 1813, but we know that Austen liked to test her novels by reading them out loud to her family. Actress Kate Beckinsale narrates this Apple Books exclusive audiobook of the beloved English novel, which is perfect considering Beckinsale portrayed another Austen heroine in a 1996 movie adaptation of Emma.
The narrator was perfect and the story was timeless, a must listen!
Forever and always the OG first ever rom-com.
This has and always will be my favorite book. Jane Austen was so charmingly ahead of the times when she wrote this masterpiece. I love how honestly and down-to-earth the characters are portrayed as, having both good qualities and bad qualities, and it’s fun seeing how each of their qualities sort of complete each other, as we see with Mr. Darcy and a Elizabeth. My god, Mr. Darcy! He’ll always be my number one BBC masterpiece drama heartthrob. (Hello? Wet shirt Colin Firth, anyone??) And of course, the Bennet family is as funny as ever, and Mr. Wickham teaches us that appearances aren’t always what they seem. Anyways, to sum it up, Jane Austen has beautifully encapsulated the good, the bad, the beautiful, and the ugly when it comes to true love in this breathtakingly wonderful novel, all while teaching a lesson and keeping us entertained.
Jane Austen at her best!
