SO deliciously dark...
This starts out very dark and … doesn’t really get less-dark as it goes. Very different from the other Cole title I’ve read (good-different, IMO. Both vibes are great).
⛓️ Graphic violence…
🖤 … involving k!d$ as well as adults.
⛓️ Bratva.
🖤 Set in NYC.
⛓️ Trafficking.
🖤 Dubcon / noncon.
⛓️ Steaminess with minors (in flashbacks—the leads are fully adult).
🖤 Captivity.
⛓️ Have I mentioned: violence.
🖤 Soulmates.
This book does an excellent job of showing what life can do to a person—the way it can completely erase who they are, at their core, but also, at the same time, it depicts how some personalities are so strong, that they’re never truly lost.
Also, I read a lot of darker reads, which means I’m no stranger to the mafia brand … one thing that was refreshingly, pleasantly unusual for me in this, is the fact that the female lead did have a supportive family. Most don’t and it gets so frustrating. Very well played, IMO.
It’s very well done and it does lean more towards “show, don’t tell” which makes it absolutely gripping, even when it’s painful and heart-wrenching.
All the stars. Wow.
