Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again . . .

The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady's maid, she can barely believe her luck. It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives--presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.

Great story that drags

The story of Rebecca is easily one of the best mystery/thrillers ever. The twists in the plot are jaw dropping. And the author included a lot of elements (like human psychology and sexuality) that make it even more intriguing without being gratuitous. I would have easily given this a 5 star but I thought it wasn’t very well written. The story drags during the most boring parts while the climatic parts are given in short description. Details are given that I couldn’t care less about (for example, paragraph upon paragraph on floral arrangements) while the really interesting parts are given very little attention and time. It was difficult to not skip past huge portions of the book.

Never tire of this story

I first read when I was 14.... I’m now mature woman who continues to love the intrigue, the humanity, and vocabulary....Daphne Du Maurer does paint pictures with words.
The 1939- 1940 movie REBECCA is true to the book, as well. Hitchcock varied the ending , but for the most part he stuck to verbatim. I recommend both!!!

Perfect narrator!

Loved this book and the voice of the narrator was the reason I chose this audiobook. She was superb!
