Publisher Description

At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft.

Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence. It will kindle their wildest dreams...and fan their darkest fears. For no one knows who the Ramans are or why they have come. And now the moment of rendezvous awaits - just behind a Raman airlock door.

BONUS AUDIO: Includes an exclusive introduction by Hugo Award-winning author Robert J. Sawyer, who explains why Rendezvous with Rama will make the listener "feel both humbled and exhilarated at the same time".

Well done, but odd sound artifacts

This is one of the most influential science fiction works of all time, by one of the most influential authors. It represents some deep insight into the nature of what extraterrestial life might be like (while not sparing humanity the magnifying glass...). It's not space opera in the sense of blasters and dashing heroes, but there is a good sense of drama, brought out by the audiobook format's sedate pace.
The voice actor seems quite fine to me -- this is not a story that benefits from an overly dramatic reading, in my opinion, and he handles the myriad accents well. It's perfect for listening to while driving, not too distracting.
My one complaint is that, while I appreciate the chapters being divided up for ease of navigation, there is an obnoxious hiss between them. It only occurs a half dozen times, and there does not seem to be any material missing, but it still detracts from an otherwise excellent audiobook.

Do not buy this book

Absolutely the worst narration I have ever heard...and I've listened to hundreds of audio books. I'm asking for a refund.

Great Story - Poor Narrator

The invidual reads in a very choppy, annoying way. Almost like how a child reads. It really is distracting, and Im a little dissapointed that such a classic wasn't given to a more skilled reader.
