Sit back and relax and learn about why overworking and under resting can be harmful to yourself and your career.
"Rest is such a valuable book. If work is our national religion, Pang is the philosopher reintegrating our bifurcated selves."---Arianna Huffington, New York Times Book Review
Overwork is the new normal. Rest is something to do when the important things are done-but they are never done. Looking at different forms of rest, from sleep to vacation, Silicon Valley futurist and business consultant Alex Soojung-Kim Pang dispels the myth that the harder we work the better the outcome. He combines rigorous scientific research with a rich array of examples of writers, painters, and thinkers---from Darwin to Stephen King---to challenge our tendency to see work and relaxation as antithetical. "Deliberate rest," as Pang calls it, is the true key to productivity, and will give us more energy, sharper ideas, and a better life. Rest offers a roadmap to rediscovering the importance of rest in our lives, and a convincing argument that we need to relax more if we actually want to get more done.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Most of us know how hard it can be to stay focused when you haven’t had a good night’s sleep. It turns out that getting lots of rest isn’t just essential to a well-balanced life—it actually can make us more productive. Silicon Valley consultant Alex Soojung-Kim Pang was on a sabbatical in England when he discovered that, by setting time aside to work less, he was actually accomplishing more. This led him to formulate the central idea of his book: how “active rest”—not just catnaps, but actually putting aside the laptop and doing something rewarding and unrelated to work obligations—results in peak performance. He backs up his argument by summarizing fascinating research on the workings of the human brain, all of which suggests that resting is a learned skill, not just a normal function of the brain. Pang also pulls inspiring real-world examples, like Maya Angelou and Stephen King—two authors known for publishing more than most of their contemporaries and who are also famous for working fewer hours each day. Veteran audiobook narrator Adam Sims reads Pang’s clear, accessible writing in a relaxed, conversational way that makes the book’s tips sound imminently practical and attainable. So while we do kinda wish that Pang’s message was just “turn on the TV and kick back,” Rest opened our eyes on a topic we thought we understood.

A wonderful book detailing the need for rest and how the modern delusion of the overworked genius does far more harm than good. Well worth your time and attention.
