Fantastic
Restriction is an offshoot of the wildly popular Kutherian Gambit series and the authors did a wonderful job of keeping the theme awareness alive but giving the new series it’s own flare & structure. The story is entertaining, engaging, magical, and tragic. The characters are likable and believable. Book 1 is definitely a “build up book” for more things to come and not all storylines are tied up at the end of this story. The narrator did a great job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene! I’m definitely looking forward to book 2!
Magic and wonder in dangerous times
Wow! This book was really great! I have to admit, I've been sort of confused about the whole Kurtherian Gambit world. I'm forever seeing books written in it. So I tried some of Justin Sloan's. I really liked it. But still there were questions in the back of my mind that I couldn't quite put my finger on. The author notes at the end of Restriction helped a lot. I think I should read some of Michael Anderle's work. Talk about a huge universe! No wonder so many authors are participating. I think I was having trouble because I kept forgetting it is taking place in the future, correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, the characters in the book were very well developed. Hannah is a 19 year old girl who has lived a rough life of fending for herself and brother. Their dad is a drunk and never works, he also beats them regularly. One day when Hannah's brother is very sick, to her amazement, she performs some magical healing on him and saves his life. She has no clue what happened. In her world, magic is forbidden. Luckily for her, there's a very wise wizard in town who takes her under his wing and starts her training. Here she begins to learn more of what the world is really made of and why things are like they are. She also obtains a new friend that will become a part of her life. He is basically a lizard, but when she gets finished with him, he has wings. I really enjoyed Hannah's adventures. The ending was so intense . It wasn't a cliff hanger but a good ending to close this chapter in her life. Because after what she witnesses, she will never be the same. My favorite part was her wizard mentor Ezekiel. He was often very funny. This would be a great series for all ages. There's some cursing but nothing too bad and it sort of goes along with the story.
The narrator is superb. I've listened to Kate Rudd in several books and she always does a wonderful job. She really knows how to bring a book to life.
