Publisher Description
No one expected the first day of summer to be the last day of normalcy.
Thanks to a contagion transmitted through herbal pesticides, the U.S. falls into dismay–killing off millions and turning them into mindless zombies.
For Miles Winstead, it's the worst day of his life. For the last four years of high school, he's been diligently working to eliminate the financial burdens on his parents all while battling his anxiety and other struggles a teen faces. But things change, sending his surrounding world into peril.
With nothing but determination and a will to survive, he manages to make it for six months alone in the misty shadows until one day he reconnects with his longtime girlfriend. But things take a turn for the worse when she gets bit on a mission he planned.
Feeling regret and doubt, he embarks on the journey of a lifetime, having only seven days to travel eight hundred miles down the west coast to save his girlfriend in the heart of December. Nothing but time stands between them and their destination in Alameda, California. But the blistering cold isn't the only threat, for Miles his haunting past continues to follow him...
With everything working against him, Miles risks his own life to save the last person he has left–Alice Winters, the love of his life.

I Absolutely Don’t Like Zombie Stories; however, this book is much more!
This is a love story between a young man, Miles, and his girlfriend Alice as they navigate a post-apocalyptic life. This new and budding author has captured the struggles of a young man working to transition into adulthood while managing social anxiety, perfectly. The main character is thrown headfirst into a tumultuous, new world of uncertainty and peril. It’s a slow starter that really delivers on action as the book evolves. At some point, I found it difficult to put down. Though enjoyable, I think the end lags and becomes more “unbelievable" with each page (SPOILER ALERT: Our couple face the same high school adversaries twice, with a world of bad guys and in a time of free reign and no law. I’d almost have wished for new characters to emerge. Also, the female lead has remarkable bouts of strength/recovery from her illness although knocking on deaths door.) I was also a bit disappointed the “made for TV” ending; the drama of the scene didn’t GIVE in the READ as well as it would have shown on screen. (Spoiler Alert: Not that I needed a happy ending for the lovers after so much struggle, it just would have been nice. )
Overall, it was a nice read. The Audible is enjoyable as well because it is presented by the author- who better to bring the characters to life!
Markus Chambers is a young author to watch!
