Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce star in their most widely recognised roles of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. After the film versions of The Hound of the Baskervilles  and  The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes  were released in 1939, Rathbone and Bruce reprised their film roles in a radio series,  The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes , which began in October 1939.
