In America's Gulf Coast region, where grounded oil tankers are being broken down for parts, Nailer, a teenage boy, works the light crew, scavenging for copper wiring just to make quota - and hopefully live to see another day. But when, by luck or chance, he discovers an exquisite clipper ship beached during a recent hurricane, Nailer faces the most important decision of his life: Strip the ship for all it's worth or rescue its lone survivor, a beautiful and wealthy girl who could lead him to a better life.
In this powerful novel, award-winning author Paolo Bacigalupi delivers a thrilling, fast-paced adventure set in a vivid and raw, uncertain future.
Customer Reviews
Gritty but enjoyably adventurous tale of being lucky, smart and simply being human.
It's a pretty good read, but a harsh and brutal story about survival, luck and hope. The fictional world young Nailer and his crew live in is so violent, dark, unforgiving and brutal that understanding the character's motivations and lack of any kind moral standard of behavior is interesting as they each struggle to make it through their daily lives. Once the adventure really kicks in the way they handle themselves and struggle to survive it is entertaining to listen to. I couldn't stop listening to how resourceful they can be in the the kill or be killed situations while still struggling with their still uncertain moral values and trust issues.

TERRIBLE
I had to read this for summer reading and it was not a good read. It was very, very slow at the beginning and is not a good story line. Not a fan.
