Milkman Dead was born shortly after a neighborhood eccentric hurled himself off a rooftop in a vain attempt at flight. For the rest of his life he, too, will be trying to fly. With this brilliantly imagined novel, Toni Morrison transfigures the coming-of-age story as audaciously as Saul Bellow or Gabriel García Márquez. As she follows Milkman from his rustbelt city to the place of his family’s origins, Morrison introduces an entire cast of strivers and seeresses, liars and assassins, the inhabitants of a fully realized black world.
"You can't go wrong by reading or re-reading the collected works of Toni Morrison. Beloved, Song of Solomon, The Bluest Eye, Sula, everything else — they're transcendent, all of them. You’ll be glad you read them."--Barack Obama
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Toni Morrison’s brilliance is at its peak in this landmark historical novel about Milkman Dead, a man born in mid-20th-century Michigan. Drawn into a family intrigue, Milkman eventually travels south to seek his fortune…and perhaps a sense of purpose. Morrison uses words the way a great composer does notes—you’ve heard them before but never in such a brilliantly moving arrangement. She dots the story with beautiful uses of magic realism and with spiritual elements like the healing practice of voodoo. The author reads the novel herself, and the audiobook includes a new foreword. Her striking vocal cadence amplifies the emotional resonance of Milkman’s journey and the many touches of the otherworldly. The power of Song of Solomon never wanes.

The best.
This is one of my favorite books by Ms. Morrison. Her voice and pace is soothing. Almost like you are sitting at the table with her, as she reads her book aloud.
Aptly named
