“Hanley’s dyslexia makes this audio format especially significant, as it represents an accessible way for readers with learning disabilities, just like him, to comprehend and enjoy his story.”—Booklist

This program is read by the author, comedian and severe dyslexic P
hil Hanley, who reveals his unlikely path to success in a story that is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking.

When Phil Hanley was in first grade, he realized something that would forever set him apart from his peers: he couldn’t read. His teachers were ill-equipped to assist him, and he slipped through the school’s cracks, year by year falling further and further behind his friends. Finally, he was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning disability that would shape the rest of his life.

Unable to pursue college or a traditional job, Phil was thrust into a life defined by unconventional twists, including a stint as a runway model in Europe. Eventually, he found himself on a stage with a microphone, a spotlight, and five minutes of jokes. Unlike so many previous pursuits, stand-up felt right to Phil, and he soon discovered that the more he worked at it, the more he got out of it—a realization that, he compellingly argues, saved his life. Spellbound is a story of humor and also of struggle and heartbreak, of constantly living in a world that sees things differently than you do, and of triumph over adversity.

Hanley tells us that dyslexia can be a huge challenge, but it doesn’t spell certain condemnation (and neither can he). Just the opposite: dyslexia has been more than a blessing in his life—it’s been his North Star.

Ironic, I chose not to read this book, but to listen to it

I am so grateful I listened to this book and heard the emotion in Phil‘s voice when he was met with pain, heartbreak, so many obstacles, and love. I selected the audiobook because it was on Oprah’s recommendations list. I had no idea the journey I was about to embark on. I have a daughter who is dyslexic. Phil has given me faith in her future successes. Even if you don’t have a child or loved one with dyslexia or is neurodivergent, this book is incredibly well written, entertaining, funny, and a page turner. Bravo Phil!

Amazing!

This audiobook made me laugh out loud—and cry even harder. I’ve never experienced a book that felt so deeply personal, so powerfully resonant. It was as if the author had reached into my own memories: the awkward school days, the dread of Sunday nights, and even the of ordering “the usual” at restaurants.

Hearing the author read his own words, straight from the heart, adds another layer of authenticity and emotion. His love for his mother and nephew shines through every chapter, making the story not only relatable but also incredibly moving.

Every teacher, educator, parent, and employer should be required to listen to this audiobook. It’s more than just a story—it’s a lesson in empathy, connection, and humanity.

Thank you to the author for creating such a remarkable experience for us all. Absolutely amazing.

Thank you, Phil.
This is a great book—filled with life, and a reminder that unexpected inspiration and support can play a big role in shaping who we become.

Also, I really enjoy your stand-up and sure hope voice to text spelled this correctly.
