“Ingenious and beguiling.” - Time

“Crichton keeps us guessing at every turn in his best work since The Andromeda Strain.” - Los Angeles Times

Sphere may be Crichton’s best novel, but even if it ranked only second or third, it would be a must for suspense fans.” - Miami Herald

A classic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Crichton, Sphere is a bravura demonstration of what he does better than anyone: riveting storytelling that combines frighteningly plausible, cutting-edge science and technology with pulse-pounding action and serious chills. The gripping story of a group of American scientists sent to the ocean floor to investigate an alien ship, only to confront a terrifying discovery that defies imagination, Sphere is Crichton prime - truly masterful fiction from the ingenious mind that brought us Prey, State of Fear, and Jurassic Park.

Sphere was made into a film directed by Barry Levinson, which starred Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Pretty good.

Take the movie Prometheus, take out the biblical/christmas/“Alien” themes, make it PG-13, set it underwater and there you go, nothing like Prometheus.

Didn’t age great.

The author try’s to add a lot of technical stuff to this book so it’s painfully obvious this book is stuck in the 80s. The couple times he gets some things wrong make it stand out like a person trying to sound smarter than they are. I found what the caricatures did and how they acted a little frustrating at times. For being supposedly super intelligent people the author didn’t always treat them as such.
The overall story is great and the ideas he put out there I really liked but there was enough frustrating parts to this that I had a hard time finding it.
I’ll end this with if you’ve seen the movie you’re not missing anything by not reading the book.

I thought it was kind of dull.

I’ve never read a Michael Crichton novel before and I decided it was time. I’ve been trawling unsuccessfully for a fun book lately and Crichton’s work has interesting premises plus he’s verryyy popular.. So I chose “Sphere” because I haven’t seen a film adaptation of it.
Well… Crichton deserves credit for writing stories that make great movies - but I really didn’t care for this book. I thought it was quite implausible although I can’t say why without spoiling. I didn’t find it especially scary or thrilling. I thought it left a lot of loose ends and I thought it was quite predictable.]
I also thought the characters were more like caricatures.
In fairness, I don’t like underwater stories very much, so maybe I ought to have picked something else.
So, sorry to play the curmudgeon, but I found “Sphere” lukewarm at best. I can see why he’s such a popular pick for a long plane trip or killing time on a vacation, he’s just good enough to hold your attention for the moment, but if you don’t finish it, it doesn’t really matter.
