From the Humorous to the Inspiring in a Rare Art Form
Garrison Keillor holds the distinction of being one of the very last great vocal story tellers in America. And it's works like this that make his reputation. Stories is a series of spoken tales. Among them are one about a guy with a Self Help problem, another about a third rate Western novel writer, and one about Babe Ruth that is among the most sublime stories I've ever heard. Keillor is a bit of an acquired taste - mostly because the old fashioned storytelling art is an acquired taste. Vocal storytelling involves drawing the listener in to the story, mesmerizing them with the tone of voice, the tempo, and even the sometimes maddening digressions from the main story. It is very much different from our modern fare of rock video speed movie scenes and machine gun dialogue. It requires you to run your own imagination on the fly. But here you are in the hands of one of America's last masters. People who listen to his PBS Radio Show know this and either have this or will eventually get it. But for the newby willing to be patient and work a little, you will not be disappointed.
