More of a long poem than a story
So far, Suttree is packed dense with very poetic imagery of scenery and moods that artfully depict the degraded environment of the characters. So far there is not much of a plot to speak of. The prison flashback was excellent and felt like a story with a plot, until it flashed forward again. Turns out it functioned mainly to provide context to other side characters who are in this seemingly morose poem devoid of a sense of a plot awaiting to unfold. I toil on in hopes that what I have read thus far will pay off in the form of foreshadowing and Suttree will all make sense. So far reading this has mostly felt like work with very few feelings of enjoyment.
**TL/DR If you came across Suttree because you really liked No Country For Old Men or The Road, proceed with caution. Be prepared for uncommonly dense descriptions of perspectives akin to how the sun looked from a particular angle.
**Disclosure I have not finished Suttree, and will update my review later if it gets better.
