It is the early nineteenth century, when European traders and adventurers first began to penetrate the forbidding Chinese mainland. And it is in this exciting time and exotic place that a giant of an Englishman, Dirk Struan, sets out to turn the desolate island of Hong Kong into an impregnable fortress of British power—and to make himself supreme ruler: Tai-Pan!

Strong people of many backgrounds struggling to start the colony of Hong Kong.
A powerful book about the trials and triumphs of being in charge, of being in love and finding pleasure in just being alive for the moment all set in a dramatic mix of Chinese and Europeans building Hong Kong from a small island and a safe harbor.
The Devil Struan!!
James Clavell tells a fantastic story here. The characters are so nostalgic and mighty, yet relatable and authentic to their faults - a good representation of life at it's fullest.
I have loved all Clavell's novels but this and Shogun are my favorites.
